I had been using my mother's 1960s Oster, which would take 10-15 min to grind the bean/water mix. I was excited to get a powerful blender suited for the job. Although the Designer Series has pre-programmed cycles, I did not find that these cycles worked well for my task. The manual mode was a big attraction for me and led to my decision to purchase the Designer Series. The other was that the motor has good air flow that will allow the motor to run cooler and presumably longer. To my dismay, I discoverd that "manual" will only operate for 50 seconds, then the unit shuts off. 50 sec is about half the time I needed. Simply starting again is not so simple, the good vortex that I had going initially throughout the volume stops, obviously. Resarting the vortex throughout the volume takes 20-30 sec of fiddling, then only 20 sec remain of the next 50 s "manual" cycle. I called Blendtec... Then, a little while ago, a bunch of cosmic forces came together and convinced my wife and me to "start juicing". (Almost simultaneously reading articles on juicing in several magazines, watching an episode of Dr. Oz and a documentary on healthy choices including juicing, and several conversations where the topic came up.)That's when we discovered the true power of this blender. I already knew that the 4" blades meant it could whip up a smoothie in nothing flat, making short work of ice cubes in the process. Also, we found that the lid design allows a lot of air into the container so it can mix with whatever is being blended.
